The Issue:
In Texas today, motorcycles—despite having no seat belts, roll cages, or comparable protection—are legally permitted on public roads at high speeds. In contrast, modern ATVs and UTVs, which come equipped with advanced safety features such as seat belts, roll cages, headlights, turn signals, mirrors, and are often insured and registered, are still barred from road use on highways with speed limits of 50 MPH or lower. This outdated policy forces responsible Texans to use vehicles that are less efficient, more expensive, or environmentally unfriendly for short trips, and it places an unnecessary burden on our rural communities.
The Solution:
We call on Texas lawmakers to pass the “50 MPH Bill,” a common-sense legislative update that will:
Allow properly equipped, registered, and insured ATVs and UTVs to operate on public roads with speed limits of 50 MPH or less.
Provide equal legal treatment for all vehicles that meet established safety standards.
Reduce enforcement ambiguity by giving clear guidelines to law enforcement officers.
Stimulate local economies by enabling responsible riders to use efficient vehicles for daily errands, work-related tasks, and tourism.
Support environmental and community benefits by reducing reliance on oversized trucks for short trips.
Why It Matters:
Modern ATVs and UTVs are not the off-road toys of the past. They are practical, efficient, and safe vehicles designed to meet the demands of today’s Texas lifestyles. Rural and suburban communities already rely on these vehicles for essential daily activities. By legalizing their use on designated roads, Texas can improve transportation options, support local businesses, and offer a fair, rational solution that reflects the realities of modern vehicle technology.
Our Request:
We urge Texas lawmakers to introduce and support legislation that updates our vehicle laws to allow the safe, legal use of street-ready ATVs and UTVs on roads with speed limits of 50 MPH or lower. It is time for Texas to catch up with other states that have already embraced this common-sense approach.
